Marco Domenichelli
09 December 2008
IN MEMORIAM

Dumfries Table Tennis Club Committee and members, past and present, were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Marco Domenichelli last week. Marco was a valued player until a persistent injury brought his playing days to an end. He won the Club’s Open Singles and the Open Doubles three times, the Handicap Singles twice and the inaugural Mixed Doubles. Several League Division 1 and Logan Trophy titles came his way, mostly alongside Ken and Gavin Young, and twice he became the division’s Leading Individual. After the Young twins stopped playing Marco joined forces with Gordon Duff and Brian Kirkpatrick. He was also a fierce contender and champion in the Carlisle League when it was in its heyday.
Marco learned much of his skill at the Club, when it was based in the Trades Hall in Queensberry Square, and progressed from a curly-haired impish youth to a pleasant young man whose immense talent was never flaunted and who became a role model for his sporting manner.

He will be much missed and the Club extends its sympathy to all his relatives and friends.

Dear Member,

Although not directly related to sport please do take a few minutes to listen to the Annual Medical Report by Doctor Harry Burns, Scotland ’s Chief Medical Officer.  It is only 3 minutes long, contains important medical advice and contains a very positive message about the importance of physical activity.

TABLE TENNIS UPDATE - 3rd September 2008

Just a few lines today to let DTTC members know the latest news.

First of all, the problem with the floor has now been resolved and play continues as normal, viz:

MONDAY OPEN NIGHTS – 7 -9 p.m.

THURSDAY GIRLS SESSION – 4.30 – 5.30 p.m.

FRIDAY COACHING – Beginners 7 – 8 p.m.; Others 8 – 9 p.m.

GORDON CLANCY COACHING: 13/14th September; 27/28th September. This is now a joint venture between the Club and the SSTTDA and both organisations will select participants.

In addition to these sessions there will soon also be an After-School session each Wednesday. Times will probably be 4 – 5 p.m. but there may be an earlier start or slightly later finish. Callum Morgan will be running these sessions, assisted by a rota of adult helpers and coaches. They are mainly for beginners and open to non-members. Watch this space and the notice-board.

At the recent AGM it was decided to raise membership and league fees slightly, in view of the steep rise in power costs. At the subsequent Committee Meeting the following matters were decided:

1)     The Regional Primary School Championships will be on Sunday 2nd November. This is because the Scottish Finals are on Sunday 23rd November with a projected British Team Championship being held in December, courtesy of the English Table Tennis Association.

2)     The Regional Scottish Secondary Schools Championships will be held on Sunday 21st December. Both Regional sectors – East and West – will play at the Club.

3)     The South of Scotland Open now has a provisional date of 10/11th January. Please keep an eye out for the final decision.

4)     The Club Championships will be held over the weekend of 14th/15th February. It is possible that qualifying groups may be played either on the Thursday or Friday evening (12/13th) prior to the main event, so please keep these few dates free if you can.

Meanwhile the other date which has been hanging in the balance is that of the Club’s 20th Anniversary Party. This has now been settled and will take place on Saturday 29th November. It will start in the afternoon and run on till the evening, so that past members with small fry in tow can drop in early in the day. A hard bat competition will be on offer – but not compulsory! We hope to see as many past members as we can get in touch with, and who can be present, at some point during the day.

League forms will soon be flying out to last year’s secretaries. If you are not running a team this season please return yours with this information, or pass it on to the new secretary. Players who wish to enter a new team – generally in Division 2 – please contact  07946 757 684 or 01387 264599 for an entry form or enquire at the Club during the sessions detailed above. The League should start in the first week of October so speedy replies are essential.

Lastly, the first Table Tennis Scotland events are:

1.      Minor Assessment, Sunday 19th October in Perth. If you will be under 13 on 1st January 2009 you are eligible for this.

2.      Senior Assessment, Sunday 9th November, Tranent.

Veteran events are:

1)     Vets Six Nations, 12-14th September, in Perth. Andrew Endredy bats for the Over-70s B team and Linda Powell for the Ladies Over-50s. Shona Morton has kindly lent her services to the Isle of Man in the same age category.

2)     Veteran Assessment Sunday 28th September. No venue announced as yet.

So, there is plenty for players to enjoy this side of Christmas.
